APCC Family Literacy Program

What Services Do We Offer?*

  • ESL instruction to adults

  • Early Childhood Education for 1-3-year-old children and/or Pre-school Education for 3-5-year old children of parents who are enrolled in ESL classes.

  • Parent Education (weekly workshops and presentations that help parents help their families, via community resources and services)

  • Parents And Children Together (“PACT”)—Staff guided activities that involve parents and children learning, creating and playing together

  • Library Education—Class visits and lessons on library use, card application, and resources

  • Home Visits—Teacher visits to the participants’ homes to observe and offer guidance to parents for creating a language-rich environment for family learning

  • Community Field Trips to enrich families’ appreciation and use of community resources

About our families and staff…

  • We serve 70-80 families per year.

  • 95% of our families are low income

  • 50% of our families receive public assistance

  • 100% of our families are limited-English proficient

  • We employ 12 professional staff, with  proficiency in 90% of languages spoken by our families.

The Family Literacy Program is made possible by an Even Start grant awarded by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE)., by Illinois State Library, a division of the Office of Secretary of State, using state funds designated for family literacy, by a Community Development Block Grant available through the Chicago Department of Public Health., and by the Illinois Community College Board.
